Commons:Panoramio files

Panoramio was a photo sharing site similar to Flickr.

This page is presently inactive and retained primarily for historical interest. Google acquired Panoramio in 2007, and after an announcement in 2014, they began a gradual shutdown of the site. All files and their descriptions were finally removed in January 2018. This page describes the processes that were used for transferring photos from Panoramio to Commons and reviewing their licenses.

The following instructions are only for administrators and community approved reviewers. If you are neither of those, you only have to tag the image {{Panoramioreview}}.

1. The image is initially in Category:Panoramio review needed.
2. If the image is currently available on Panoramio under the same license as on the Commons, modify the review template to {{Panoramioreview|YourUsername|Date}}. This places it in Category:Panoramio images reviewed by trusted users.
3. Sometimes users on Panoramio upload public domain images which are then transferred to Commons. The license of these images on Panoramio is irrelevant; mark it {{Panoramioreviewunnecessary}}. You can also use this tag for images freely licensed elsewhere (such as on Flickr). The tag can also be used if it is own work uploaded both to Commons and Panoramio by same user (and it is verified).
4. If the image is currently available on Panoramio under a license which is allowed on the Commons, but the license on Commons is not the same (such as an older version of the same license), update the license tag on the Commons image to match the Panoramio one and modify the review template to {{Panoramioreview|YourUsername|Date|changed=license}}. This places it in Category:Panoramio images reviewed by trusted users.
5. If the licence is allowed on the Commons, сheck if the author is properly attributed.
6. If the image is currently available on Panoramio with a license which is not acceptable on Commons, do not update the license tag. Instead modify the review tag to {{Panoramioreview|YourUsername|Date|CurrentPanoramioLicense}}. This places it in Category:Possibly unfree Panoramio images.
7. Please leave a comment on the photo, such as "Thanks for licensing this CC-BY! Your choice of a free license has allowed us to use your image in Wikimedia Commons (http://commons.wikimedia.org/ )." to confirm that the photographer did not make a mistake in their license selection and to encourage them to join our community.

Upload

The Python pyWikipedia framework offers a tool to upload from Panoramio: Panoramio Picker.

At the moment (July 2012), there is no semi-automated web-tool to upload from Panoramio, like there is for Flickr.
