question[edit]

How to post pictures in Wikipedia in my account King Saifonce (talk) 18:24, 19 August 2019 (UTC)

How can I update a picture please Mohamed houssein farah (talk) 17:22, 9 March 2020 (UTC)

  • @Mohamed houssein farah: It is almost never correct to update a picture on Commons, unless it is your own work and you are making a technical correction such as a light rotation & crop, or adjusting color levels. That said, whenever you are logged in, on every file page there should be an "Upload new version" link under the file history at the bottom of the page. Please familiarize yourself with COM:OVERWRITE before using this. - Jmabel ! talk 04:01, 10 March 2020 (UTC)

And how I post picture in Wikipedia in my account Mohamed houssein farah Mohamed houssein farah (talk) 17:23, 9 March 2020 (UTC)

  • @Mohamed houssein farah: I'm not sure what you mean, but I'm guessing you mean adding the picture to your Wikipedia user page. You can do that the same way as on any other page. There are a lot of possibilities, but typically what you'll want is something like [[File:example.jpg|thumb|caption]]. - Jmabel ! talk 04:03, 10 March 2020 (UTC)

Image cannot display properly[edit]

I have uploaded this image to commons, however it cannot display and when i click Original file, it only show "File not found: /v1/AUTH_mw/wikipedia-commons-local-public.98/9/98/Vcity_gate_closed_20190921.jpg" How can I solve the problem? thanks!--Wpcpey (talk) 02:01, 26 September 2019 (UTC)

Even I could see a correct displayed picture. Please try again. Greetings --Wilhelm Zimmerling PAR (talk) 06:48, 26 September 2019 (UTC)
I can't, though, so something is probably wrong with at least one server. Usually these things do resolve over time, though. - Jmabel ! talk 16:25, 27 September 2019 (UTC)

load and use an image on behalf of a friend ?[edit]

First search, later ask[edit]

I suggest change the order: first try to find and later ask (this is good, because also similar question can be asked in the same place).--BoldLuis (talk) 08:17, 11 May 2020 (UTC)

Hey!What's the minimum & maximum size of picture? Can I add more than one picture?[edit]

Hey!What's the minimum & maximum size of picture? Can I add more than one picture? Murshida Ferdous Mim (talk) 12:13, 1 June 2020 (UTC)

  • @Murshida Ferdous Mim: No specific minimum, but we always want the highest resolution available.
  • Maximum: at some point you run into technical limits, and start needing to do chunked uploads, but that chance that that will come up with photos as such is slim, it happens more with videos, PDFs of documents, etc. Those last even occasionally get to where they need to be split up.
  • Of course you can add more than one picture (assuming they are in scope. Some of us have uploaded tens of thousands of pictures. - Jmabel ! talk 01:56, 2 June 2020 (UTC)

New volunteer[edit]

If help is needed in blacklisting newly uploaded images, I will volunteer. Charles Juvon (talk) 04:26, 19 August 2020 (UTC)

@Charles Juvon: Hi, and welcome. What do you mean by "blacklisting newly uploaded images"?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 15:43, 19 August 2020 (UTC)
I was browsing Commons and found pages of images that were blacklisted - they were awful. It lead me to believe incoming images were watched for bad stuff. Anyway, I'll volunteer for something that does not require experience. Charles Juvon (talk) 17:24, 19 August 2020 (UTC)
@Charles Juvon: I am still not sure what you are talking about. Photographs of low technical quality? Images that were on some basis offensive to you? Copyright violations? Something else? - Jmabel ! talk 23:17, 19 August 2020 (UTC)
Sorry, it's here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki_talk:Bad_image_list .Charles Juvon (talk) 23:50, 19 August 2020 (UTC)
@Charles Juvon: en:MediaWiki:Bad image list is a list of images that are not allowed to be used on English Wikipedia (except in rare circumstances) because of their shock value and history of having been used for shock vandalism. While most of them are hosted here on Commons, Commoners per se have no control over that list (although any account in good standing can request additions at en:MediaWiki talk:Bad image list), as it is run and protected by English Wikipedia Admins. What does this section have to do with the Commons:Help desk, discussion of which is the purpose of this page?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 00:02, 20 August 2020 (UTC).
Thank you for helping a newbie. I thought images were uploaded to Commons, and I wondered who nuked images as soon as they arrived if they are really bad. Who can immediately take down images that compromise national security or severely break Federal law? Charles Juvon (talk) 00:35, 20 August 2020 (UTC)
@Charles Juvon: You're welcome. Commons Admins can do that.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 01:09, 20 August 2020 (UTC)
Hey @Charles Juvon: Welcome. As Jeff indicates, we have a range of volunteers that help to review newly uploaded images and report issues as they are identified. Often, these are quickly deleted by administrators if the problems are egregious and obvious, or may be the subject of a community discussion at Commons:Deletion requests if there are potential issues that are more complex and require extended examination.
Each project is free to black list images they feel are particularly problematic, and Commons also has measures in place where we can technically prevent certain images from being uploaded again once they are deleted. Though the intricate details of all these technical measures are not necessarily widely advertised for obvious reasons. GMGtalk 20:05, 20 August 2020 (UTC)
Thank you, GMG. I found and set https://wikistream.toolforge.org/#namespace=file&wiki=en.wikipedia . What is the best tool to look at newly uploaded images? Charles Juvon (talk) 00:39, 21 August 2020 (UTC)
