discovered at theHarvard Observatory, which are the result of adeliberate search for such bodies by the carefulexamination of photographic plates. Mrs. Fleming,who spends her life in such work, has had thegood fortune to detect no less than six of thesewonderful objects as the reward of her laboriousscrutiny; and she is the only person who has thusfound new stars by photography until this ac-cidental discovery at Oxford. In these cases alsowe may say that deliberate search was rewarded ;for Dr. Anderson is probably the most assiduous*watcher of the skies living, though he seldomuses a telescope ; sometimes he uses an opera-glass, but usually the naked eye. He describeshimself as an Astrophil rather than as anastronomer. *I love the stars, he says; * andwhenever they are shining, I must be looking.And so on every fine night he stands or sits athis open study window gazing at the heavens.
