Charles Herbert Bebb (1856-1942) was born in England, of English and Irish descent. He worked as an engineer in South Africa on the Cape Town-Kimberley Railway from 1877 to 1882. He moved to Chicago in 1882, working for railway interests there, and then joined the firm Adler & Sullivan as an architect. For Adler & Sullivan he came to Seattle to work on building projects, including the Seattle Theater and Hotel, a project which was later abandoned, occasioning Charles' return to Chicago. However, he later accepted the position of architectural engineer for the Denny Clay Company, and moved permanently to Seattle in 1893. He was married to Virginia Rutter Burnes, with whom he had two children. Some of his architectural projects in Seattle included the Frye Hotel, the Athletic Club, the Stander Hotel and the New Seattle Times building.
