Description

Helichrysum sanguineum wikispecies Helichrysum sanguineum

English: The red everlasting is a flowering plant of the genus Helichrysum in the daisy family. It is a protected plant in some jurisdictions. It is a symbol for the Israeli Yom Hazikaron (Memorial Day for the Israeli Fallen Soldiers and the Victims of Terrorism) and is worn on ceremonies on the white shirt.
עברית: דם-מכבים אדום, צמח רב-שנתי ממשפחת המורכבים. צמח הגדל במושבות קטנות וצפופות ומגיע לגובה של כ-60-100 ס"מ. הגבעולים והעלים מכוסים לבד לבן, ובקצות הגבעולים ממוקמים גושי קשקשים בצבע אדום הנראים כ'טיפות דם'. קשקשים אלה אינם פרחים, אלא למעשה מעטפת התפרחת, ובתוכה צומח פרח צהוב. הפריחה היא בחודשים אפריל-מאי, אז נפתח לתקופה קצרה מעטה התפרחות. מקור השם של דם המכבים הוא אגדה לפיה פורח הפרח בכל מקום בו טיפת דם נפלה לארץ. דם-המכבים האדום הינו סמל של יום הזיכרון לחללי מערכות ישראל. מדבקה עם תמונת הצמח מחולקת ביום זה בבתי הספר, בעצרות הזיכרון ובבתי הקברות ונענדת על דש הבגד.
