Mein Vater geriet im ersten Weltkrieg als Soldat der Infanterie in die schweren Kämpfe vor Verdun. In wunderbarer Weise wurde er durch seine Bibel gerettet, die er als frommer Christ immer bei sich trug und während des Schlafes im Unterstand unter seinen Kopf legte. Als eine Granate einschlug und den Unterstand zertrümmerte, wurden viele seiner Kameraden schwer verwundet oder getötet. Ein etwa 4 cm großer Granatsplitter zerfetzte die Bibel unter seinem Kopf, durchschlug sie aber nicht völlig, so dass mein Vater unverletzt am Leben blieb.

Die Bibel, ein kostbares, in der Familie aufbewahrtes Erinnerungsstück, war sehr real seine Rettung zum Leben gewesen.
