Translations and lists (cont)[edit]

A question posed on 2 February 2019, Commons talk:Copyright tags/Archive 2#Translations and lists, did not draw any responses. Assuming the subject is not controversial, I propose to start the following overhaul:

  1. Split out the lists of copyright tags on this page into smaller lists such as "Commons:Copyright tags/Public domain", "Commons:Copyright tags/Country-specific" and "Commons:Copyright tags/Creative Commons".
  2. Most of the copyright/license tags would now be defined in sub-list pages, while this page would serve as an overview and index.
  3. Mark the sub-list pages for translation using the translation extension, with relatively small translation units that each hold three or four tags
  4. Update the translated versions of this page such as Commons:Bandeaux de licence to point to the new sub-lists
  5. Convert this page and the translated versions of this page to the translation extension

The advantages are:

  • The much shorter main page will make it easier to understand the overall concepts and to locate the sub-page holding appropriate tags
  • The smaller sub-pages will be easier to maintain
  • All the translated versions of this page and the sub-pages will be brought into lock step, in the sense that:
    • The English and translated versions will have exactly the same heading and content structure
    • The reader of a translated version will see a translation of each section from the master (English) version if available, or will see the English text if it has not been translated
    • If the English version of a section has been updated since the translation was made, the translation of the section will display with a pink background, indicating that it may be out of date.

The translated versions in the current structure are often outdated, incomplete and inaccurate. This overhaul will solve that problem, or at least make it clear to readers where they should and should not rely on the accuracy of a translation.

  • Symbol support vote.svg Support, and I would also propose creating a category like "(Possibly) Outdated translations" maybe even "(Possibly) Outdated translations by language" sub-divided into "(Possibly) Outdated translations (de)", "(Possibly) Outdated translations (ru)", "(Possibly) Outdated translations (fr)", Etc. So translators could maintain these. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 14:27, 8 April 2019 (UTC)

I have done the first cut. I think it makes it easier to locate a specific type of tag, and easier to maintain the lists. In the translated versions of the sub-pages the outdated (or needing review) translations will be highlighted. See for example Commons:Copyright_tags/Country-specific_tags/zh. This helps both the translator and the reader. It will take a couple of weeks to complete migration to the translation extension. Aymatth2 (talk) 01:36, 23 April 2019 (UTC)

The migration is now complete. I hope I have not introduced too many errors. Some notes:

  • As expected, the translations had major gaps and were often out of date. At least now they will remain in sync with the parent English version, with text that needs review or update highlighted. It should be easier to steadily translate the the language versions one sentence or paragraph at a time.
  • In a side discussion, User:Nemo bis pointed out that it may be harder to find tags now that the page has been broken up. It is not always obvious where to look. The Missouri Historical Society provides useful material, but is the license PD? GNU? CC? something else? I added a search box and an index in an effort to solve the problem.
  • The index may have been a waste of time. Category:License tags has thousands of files, including {{Attribution-MissouriHistoricalSociety}}, and new ones are being added all the time. So I have tweaked the wording on this set of pages to make it clear that at present it just gives an overview and samples of different kinds of tags, with pointers to license categories that hold more complete lists.

Any ideas for next steps welcome. Aymatth2 (talk) 14:24, 7 May 2019 (UTC)

Tag for CERN Open Hardware License?[edit]

I couldn't find a tag for the CERN Open Hardware Licence. Should I create one or can someone point me in the right direction? Ainali (talk) 17:56, 14 April 2020 (UTC)

@Ainali: it doesn't seem to exist, if you are able to, please go ahead and create it. :)-- Darwin Ahoy! 18:42, 14 April 2020 (UTC)
