OF PAINTING In the October of that year of 1629 that Velazquez WHEREINwent to Italy, there had been born to the king and Isabella SPAINof Bourbon, a son, Baltazar Carlos—the same year that BURSTSsaw the birth of the illegitimate Don Juan of Austria. NTOThe little Baltazar Carlos, on whom all the hopes of the FULLESTwayward king were thenceforth set, was in his second yearwhen the great painter returned to Madrid, and Velazquezwas to paint the manly child from his nursery days, withhis dwarf in attendance, to the eve of his death in mid-youth, in his sixteenth year. These portraits of the InfanteDon Baltazar Carlos nearly cover the whole of Velazquezssecond period. Nine years afterwards, in 1638, was bornto the king and Isabel a daughter, Maria Teresa, whomVelazquez was also to paint, and often.
